Understanding the 9 Protected Characteristics

At Downsway Primary School we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where every child feels valued and accepted. As part of our curriculum and wider school ethos, we teach children about the 9 Protected Characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

These characteristics are protected by law to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equally, and to help prevent discrimination, bullying and unfair treatment.

What Are the 9 Protected Characteristics?

The 9 Protected Characteristics are:

  • Age – Respecting people of all ages.
  • Disability – Understanding and supporting those with physical or learning disabilities.
  • Gender Reassignment – Respecting individuals who are transitioning or have transitioned from the gender assigned at birth.
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership – Recognising and respecting different family structures and relationships.
  • Pregnancy and Maternity – Supporting individuals who are pregnant or have a baby.
  • Race – Valuing people of all ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds.
  • Religion or Belief – Respecting people of all faiths and beliefs, including those with no religion.
  • Sex – Treating boys and girls fairly and equally.
  • Sexual Orientation – Respecting people who may be attracted to the same sex, the opposite sex or both.

How We Teach This at Downsway

  • We introduce these ideas in age-appropriate and sensitive ways through:
  • Our curriculum – PSHE, RE, computing, Science, PE, art, English, etc.
  • Assemblies
  • Storybooks and classroom discussions

Please refer to each year group document for more information.

Our goal is to help children:

  • Understand and celebrate differences
  • Develop empathy and kindness
  • Stand up against discrimination and unfairness
  • Feel confident and proud of who they are
  • By learning about the protected characteristics, children grow up to be respectful, thoughtful and inclusive members of our community.
