Lunar New Year-Themed Day

Year 1 enjoyed a wonderful day learning about Lunar New Year and how it is celebrated around the world. We began by reading Chinese Lunar New Year and explaining that today marks a special celebration known as Lunar New Year, which is celebrated by people in China and many other places across the world. We explored where China is on the map and discussed how families prepare for and celebrate this important festival. The children watched short clips to help them understand traditions such as decorations, special foods, family gatherings and performances.

We shared the traditional story of The Great Race, discovering how the years of the zodiac were named. The children loved learning about the different animals and used the animal masks to retell the story.

We were very lucky to visit the Year 2 outdoor area cabin, which had been transformed into a Chinese restaurant role-play area. The children loved taking on different roles and immersing themselves in the experience.

In the afternoon, we tried a selection of Chinese foods and shared our opinions about what we liked (and what we weren’t quite so sure about!). It was lovely to see everyone being brave and willing to try something new.

A fantastic day of cultural learning, exploration and celebration! Well done Year 1! Miss Gale
